- Charleston selected as U.S. headquarters for Superbox cold chain system
- Modular units cut cold storage build times from months to weeks
- Fleet will include 30,000 assets serving food, pharmaceutical and chemical suppliers
- Long-term plans include a Lowcountry manufacturing facility and 100 jobs
Dawsongroup tcs USA is launching Superbox, a modular cold chain system, in the United States with Charleston serving as the company’s U.S. headquarters. The cold chain system is used by suppliers of goods from food to pharmaceuticals when those items require refrigeration from the point of origination to the final destination.
Dawsongroup tcs USA said Superbox will be based in Charleston because of the city’s connection to the Port of Charleston and the East Coast supply chain. The Superbox fleet will include 30,000 assets with plans to reduce a standard 12 to 18-month construction timeline to a few weeks.
“The U.S. market has been operating under the same rigid cold chain model for decades, and it is long overdue for more modern solutions,” Aidan McCauley, president at Dawsongroup tcs USA, said in a news release. “Whether a business is managing a million-dollar pharmaceutical shipment, sensitive chemical compounds or high-volume food distribution, the risk of infrastructure failure is the same. The Superbox isn’t just an upgrade: it’s a fundamental rethinking of the cold chain that allows companies across all sectors to eliminate risk and scale with total confidence.”
According to the release, the site is designed to support international companies in close proximity to Charleston terminals. Dawsongroup tcs’ five-year plan also includes establishing a manufacturing facility in the Lowcountry to reduce lead times and shipping costs.
Superbox storage units are designed to be 50% wider than standard cold storage containers with leasing designed to eliminate the capital risk of fixed, long-term investments, Dawsongroup tcs USA said.
The Dawsongroup tcs team is expected to scale to 100 employees once operational. According to the release, the company plans for the Charleston site to exceed the size of its U.K. operations.
